What about journals nowadays?


In today's post, I propose to you a survey about our knowledge and contact with journals. Its main objective is to identify the role and impact they have in our daily life activities and in education, specifically in language teaching and learning.

  1. Thanks for this information. Communication is one main aspect that should be covered in the EFL classroom; it is evident that topics related to journalism can be introduced in class to help in the development of this competence. Unfortunately, sometimes communication is limited in the classroom, as the students are not encouraged to participate naturally; also, the type of activities, regarding writing and speaking, do not have a clear purpose. For these reasons, as Rodríguez and Roux (2012) suggest, communication strategies should be taught, so the students have an idea on how to approach information and how to use it in order to communicate with others.

  2. I have really learned many differences about journals thanks your journal. Besides, the point I most praise here is that journals show information in which factual knowledge is the center, because when children recognize or identify a thing that is exposing their context it could be easier achieve their interest in this type of reading. However, teacher role is determinant due to they need to create strategies to have a effective English class.

Firstly, I wouId like to remark that this blog is really engaging, taking into account that we as language students and language teachers are usually using this kind of resources to be informed or to enjoy. Nevertheless it is important to recognize how meaningful results can provide the kind of journals that we ususally implement and if nowadays are important to learners or not because it is fact that today students don't privilege readings in paper, magazines or journals but They read in other platforms , the questions is not what kink of tool they use to read but What kind of themes or lectures they read.

  4. As an authentic document, I think that journals are essential to the EFL, FLE and other foreign languages classes. They're even useful for the the "first language" or mother tongue classes since they can originate different communicative situations, due to their nature as communicative tools. However, I consider, taking into account Berard's (1991) thoughts on the subject as well as Moirand's (1992) idea of the pre-pedagogical analysis, that every authentic document introduced in a language class (whether it is first, second or foreign language) must go through a well-pondered process of didactic transposition (or "transposition didactique" as it is called in French). This shows that the mere fact of bringing the authentic document into the classroom -in this case the journals- will never be enough since its contents must be adapted to the learning needs, to the level and to the interests of the students. Didactic transposition is, therefore, a must and this requires that teachers analyse and transposed beforehand what they want to use in their classes.
